The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) was delighted to welcome Tony Pidgely, Chair of the Berkeley Group, to its 2012 Council reception at Charterhouse, as well as to speak at the institute’s practitioners’ forum on ‘localism’, in Godalming, on 27-28 September.
The Practitioners’ Forum is a new initiative by the IHBC to encourage policy engagement and development through wide-ranging themed discussions across an invited audience of conservation practitioners and sector interests.
The 2012 Practitioners’ Forum is themed around localism, and the delegates heard from, among others, the leader of one of the most successful house building companies in recent years, Tony Pidgely, founder of Berkeley Homes and Chair of the Berkley Group. Other speakers included Dave Chetywn, IHBC past Chair, and Matthew Evans, Head of planning at Waverley.
The 2012 practitioners’ forum was hosted by the IHBC’s South East Branch, with the support of the Waverley Council, and linked to the IHBC’s annual peripatetic council, that time each year when institute trustees meet and explore current issues in different parts of the country. The council meeting took place in the ‘Pepper Pot’ in Godalming, and was followed by a walking tour of the town to the evening reception at Charterhouse School, followed by welcomes from the town and council.
The practitoners’ forum the following day had the benefit of contributions from the IHBC’s officers, including Branch trustees, ensuring that ideas will feed back to institute members UK-wide.
IHBC members should be sure to ask their Branch representative on council for a first hand report on the debate.
