The Fire Protection Association writes:

FPA is proud to announce the launch of its fully digitised Fire & Risk Management (F&RM) journal, now available exclusively for members

Membership of the FPA supports fire safety professionals in their roles by providing access to comprehensive fire safety advice, guidance, and resources. The F&RM journal helps members stay informed of the very latest industry developments, emerging risks, protection technologies, and best practice, with the new online version giving members a seamless and engaging digital reading experience. Accessible via the FPA website, the online journal features:

  • integrated audio and video content
  • advanced search functionality across all issues
  • centralised hub where members can explore feature articles, membership spotlights, and news items from every issue.

Speaking about the launch, Aisha Farooq, Deputy Editor of F&RM, said: ‘After over a year of planning, designing, and creating online content, we are thrilled to unveil this new digital experience for our members. Our goal was to make the Fire & Risk Management journal more accessible, interactive, and user-friendly, reflecting the way professionals consume information today. This is a significant step forward in our commitment to supporting fire safety professionals with the tools and resources they need to stay informed and resilient.’

Commitment to accessibility

To coincide with the journal’s digital transformation, the FPA has enhanced its website accessibility by introducing the Recite Me Assistive Toolbar. This addition ensures that every website visitor, regardless of their individual needs, can browse, engage, and access online content without barriers.  With an estimated 1 in 4 people facing challenges online due to disabilities, learning differences, visual impairments, or language barriers, the Recite Me toolbar provides equal access to information and services for all FPA members and visitors, helping to create a truly inclusive digital experience.

The Recite Me toolbar is available across the whole FPA website, including the new digital F&RM journal, and includes key features such as:

  • Screen Reading Support: Assists visitors with visual impairments or cognitive differences
  • Reading Aids: Improve focus, comprehension, and retention
  • Customisable Styling: Users can adjust fonts, colours, and layouts to their preferences
  • Translation & Text-to-Speech: On-demand translation into over 100 languages, including 65 text-to-speech voices, ensures non-native English speakers can fully engage with content

Ross Linnett, Founder and CEO of Recite Me commented: ‘It’s inspiring to see the FPA leading by example in supporting online visitors. The internet should be for everyone, and by providing assistive tools online, the FPA is helping to create a more inclusive digital world where nobody is left behind.’

Fire Safety Journey of a Building

To celebrate the launch of the new digitised F&RM journal, the FPA has made its January 2025 special issue, Fire Safety Journey of a Building freely available to access.  The issue follows on from the FPA’s year-long Know Your Building campaign in 2021 which sought to improve both fire safety standards and the understanding of fire-related risks amongst building owners and those responsible for fire safety, supporting them to achieve stronger resilience against the threat of fire. The special issue aims to demonstrate fire safety best practice by showing how interlinked the main stages of design, construction, and usage are in the journey to a fire safe building and explores the entire fire safety journey of a fictional tower – the WRaP building: a place for Work, Rest and Play.

Taking the RIBA Plan of Work as a basis, the Fire Safety Journey is split into three key parts:

  • Building design and planning
  • Construction phase
  • Use and ongoing maintenance

Each stage of the journey is examined by experts from across the built environment who look at how they would approach working on the WRaP in their respective fields and the integral role of fire safety within that journey.

Simon Brand, the FPA’s Editor and creator of the special issue concept said, ‘Our fictional building – the WRaP – was born because we wanted to demonstrate that the journey to a fire safe building is one that begins at the very conception of a building, touches upon multiple roles and professionals, and runs throughout its entire lifespan. Each of our contributors helped bring this concept to life within their individual fields of expertise which enabled us to cover the building’s entire fire safety journey and illustrated how interlinked the stages to a fire safe building are.’
