Top Ten Endangered Buildings in the news
- The Kursaal, Southend-on-Sea, Essex – Top Ten 2024
The local Southend-on-Sea MP Bayo Alaba and the local council leader have been working to move the agenda forward in relation to this much-loved seaside landmark. The MP hosted a meeting in Westminster with the current leaseholder and the council. Our Southern Conservation Adviser Morgan-Ellis Leah this month visited the building with the MP, Council Leader and a representative from Historic England.
- Birley Spa, Sheffield – Top Ten 2025
Sheffield County Council have met with the Birley Spa Preservation Trust and our South Yorkshire Group chair Nigel Slack. Significant progress was made and we now await actions from SCC. The group would be granted further event licenses to at least the end of 2025 if not through to July 2026 which is essential to their ongoing fundraising. The Council committed to provide the group with a letter of commitment to arrange a lease, which would enable the group to approach heritage funders with confidence. The local press have been very supportive during and after the Top Ten.
- The Queensbury Tunnel, West Yorkshire – Top Ten 2019
National Highways has managed to convince the Government that blocking the tunnel off is the best way forward. The Queensbury Tunnel Society has taken the first step towards a possible legal challenge of the Minister’s decision to infill the tunnel by launching a crowdfunding appeal to cover the pre-action stage of a Judicial Review.
- St Peter & St Paul, Birch, Essex – Top Ten 2012
The Chelmsford Diocese has recently voted to allow Birch Inspire another six months to work on retaining part of this Essex Church through to mid-January 2026. Inspire and the Diocese agreed the focus would now be on the business plan and initial in-principle discussions with both Colchester Planning and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Birch InSpire’s application to become a registered charity was accepted by the Charity Commission and their website is now live.
