IHBC features ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Council ‘unable’ to argue against Chinese Embassy proposal

Tower Hamlet’s rejection of Chinese Embassy plans in the borough in December was based on police objections which have since been withdrawn, reports The Slice Tower Hamlets magazine.

The Slice Tower Hamlets/ Whitechapel LDN writes:

Plans to create a Chinese ‘super-embassy’ opposite the Tower of London were boosted on Tuesday as the Council confirmed it could not argue against the proposal.

… Tower Hamlets Council admitted it is ‘no longer in a position to present evidence’ for why the project should be refused.

Morag Ellis KC, a lawyer acting on behalf of the council, told Tuesday’s hearing that due to the Met withdrawing its objection, the council was ‘no longer in a position to present evidence in support of the putative reason for refusal’…

Christopher Katkowski KC, a lawyer speaking on behalf of the embassy, said there was ‘literally no basis’ on which the proposed embassy could be refused permission…
