IHBC features ‘Heritage from the Global doorstep’ – UNESCO supports reconstruction of Mosul treasures

In 2014, the IS terrorist group took control of the Iraqi city of Mosul, systematically destroying its many cultural monuments but, with help from UNESCO, some historic buildings are now opening after reconstruction.

DW Global Media Forum writes:

…When the Iraqi army recaptured the city of Mosul in 2017, there was not much left of the city. Famous monuments lay in ruins and more than 130,000 homes had been destroyed. According to UNESCO, over 80% of the Old City was destroyed.

Since 2018, UNESCO, together with the Iraqi government, the United Arab Emirates,United Arab Emirates, the EU and other partners, has been helping to rebuild the city’s cultural monuments… project titled ‘Revive the Spirit of Mosul.’…

To rebuild the Al-Tahira church, 30 construction workers were recruited each day from the neighborhood…

… After just 11 months, the monastery was restored… three new bells too… made in a foundry in Normandy.

The restoration of the Al-Hadba minaret… the tower stands again after being painstakingly reassembled…
