A new practice guide for architects in conservation – described as ‘the only book that deals systematically with the ICOMOS Guidelines’ – has been launched by the RIBA, and with co-authors that include IHBC Chair David McDonald and IHBC Membership Secretary Andrew Shepherd, it also now features on the IHBC’s ‘Member publications’ web page.
IHBC Chair and book co-author David McDonald said: ‘It has been a real privilege to work with colleagues and the RIBA on this publication.’
‘While there are other books on building conservation out there, this is the only one which mirrors the structure of the ICOMOS Education and Training Guidelines. It also has the bonus of an additional chapter on dealing with climate change. It should be of benefit to anyone seeking accreditation in building conservation’.
The RIBA writes:
This is an essential guide for those taking either the RIBA Conservation Register Course or another building conservation course. Taking as its starting point the ICOMOS Education and Training Guidelines, the internationally-recognised set of criteria, this book explores everything you need to know when undertaking projects that involve architectural conservation.
This is the only book that deals systematically with the ICOMOS Guidelines, written by RIBA course tutors, bringing their extensive expertise to the table, with their varied and practical experience in the public, private and academic sectors. With guidance that can applied both in the UK and internationally, and covering the essential aspects of climate change and retrofit, this is a must-have handbook.
