The New Year Honours List 2024: IHBC welcomes honours recognising personal contributions to linked sectors

The IHBC’s Chair David McDonald has welcomed the recognition of their personal contributions to the diverse sectors, disciplines, roles and activities on which sustainable and effective conservation outcomes rely, including especially the IHBC’s own Philip Davies.

David McDonald said: ‘I’m pleased to see that the value of heritage has been recognised in many of the New Year’s honours and it is particularly gratifying to see that IHBC Member Philip Davies’s contribution to the sector over many years has been acknowledged in his award of an OBE’.


Philip Davies was awarded an OBE in the Diplomatic section of The King’s New Year Honours List for services to UK and Commonwealth heritage. An international heritage consultant and best-selling author of thirteen books on London, India and Burma, he is the former Planning and Development Director at English Heritage and the Founder and Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Heritage Forum. He established and manages the £12.26 million Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Commonwealth Heritage Skills Training Programme along with the CHF consultant team. It is the largest heritage project in the Commonwealth’s history.

Among those honoured the Institute notes especially:

  • Rene Olivieri (CBE), chairman of National Trust
  • Andrew Scattergood (CBE), for services to heritage and charity
  • John Boyne-Aitken (BEM) for services to heritage crafts
  • Alexander Ritchie (BEM) of the Buchan Heritage Society
  • Nick Hill (MBE) Historic England’s National Conservation Projects Manager, for services to heritage
  • Audley English (MBE) for services to architecture and sustainability
  • Nicholas Boys Smith (MBE) for services to planning and design
  • Steven Miller (MBE) for culture and heritage and tourism
  • John Ward (MBE) for services to conservation
  • Lady Patty Hopkins (OBE) for services to architecture
  • Christopher Blandford (OBE) for services to world heritage
  • Richard Broyd (OBE) for services to heritage and conservation
  • Diane Ruddock (OBE) Northern Ireland, National Trust external affairs manager
  • Edward Album (OBE) for services to railway heritage and communities
  • Philip Davies (OBE) for services to UK and Commonwealth heritage.

More than 1,200 recipients have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a focus on those who have given with generosity to others in need.

Individuals have been recognised for being dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people.

The Prime Minister is committed to ensuring that honours are awarded to people across the whole of the UK, so that the honours system captures and celebrates the fantastic contribution of people throughout the country.

The honours system strives to be inclusive of all of the UK society. Of the 1,227 people who receive an award:

  • 1,073 candidates have been selected at BEM, MBE and OBE level:
    • 377 at BEM
    • 460 at MBE
    • 236 at OBE
  • 811 (66%) of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity;
  • 770 (63.4%) of the recipients live outside of London and the South East
  • 588 women are recognised in the List, representing 48% of the total:
    • 2% of recipients at CBE level and above are women;
  • 8% of the successful candidates come from an ethnic minority background:
    • 4% of recipients are from an Asian ethnic group;
    • 8% of recipients are from a black ethnic group;
    • 8% of recipients with a mixed ethnic background;
    • 6% of recipients come from another ethnic background;
