IHBC, ICCROM and many more mourn the death of Jukka Jokilehto

The sad news of the death of renowned, respected and much-admired Jukka Jokilehto – a co-founder and leading light in modern conservation practice and understanding – has been felt across a huge number of lead bodies, including the IHBC where he contributed to our Schools, publications, awards and much more.

IHBC Membership and Ethics Secretary and Committee Chair Andrew Shepherd said: ‘How sad that this quiet and most charming of men has passed away.’

‘What knowledge and erudition is now lost to us all.’

‘He travelled far and wide, and ceaselessly, to spread the word of conservation, and generations have benefited.

‘His magisterial opus ‘A History of Architectural Conservation’, first published as long ago as 1999, remains a set text for all students of conservation.’

‘His service to ICCROM for more than forty years will never be surpassed.’

ICCROM writes:

The ICCROM community is devastated at the news of the death of Jukka Jokilehto, one of our most prolific former staff members and a great friend of the organization.  Jukka retired in 1998 as Assistant to the Director General of ICCROM and was responsible for the training and conservation education of many generations of conservation professionals around the world. His depth of knowledge in the history and theory of conservation as well as built heritage conservation in general and urban heritage in particular, made him one of the most respected scholars internationally. His dedication to sharing this knowledge continued long after he retired, and his lectures were also a highlight of ICCROM activities. Our thoughts go to his family and friends.

A fuller biography will follow in due course.
