National Highways has abandoned its plans to infill a 156-year-old disused rail bridge in the South Downs National Park.

Last year, the road operator revealed that it would be instructing contractors to carry out the infilling of Stoke Road bridge under permitted development rights….
The decision was met by strong opposition… the chief executive of the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) labelling the plans as “vandalism”….
However, the work was put on hold by the Department for Transport… after the infilling of the Great Musgrave bridge in Cumbria caused a nationwide backlash.
Now, National Highways has revealed that there is ‘no need to conduct major works on the bridge’….
