THA writes:
On Monday afternoon, it was confirmed that Rt Hon. Liz Truss MP received the highest proportion of votes from Conservative party members voting in the leadership ballot and became the party’s leader.
Truss has now taken over the role of prime minister from Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, who formally handed his resignation to the Queen on Tuesday afternoon. Some useful insight into this process has been published in the House of Commons Library.
Liz Truss is the MP for South-West Norfolk, first elected in 2010. As Prime Minister, she intends to pursue three early priorities: Getting Britain working again; the energy crisis; and the NHS. Her first statement as Prime Minister has been published on Gov.uk.
Changes in Cabinet
Liz Truss’ appointment was followed by a series of ministerial resignations, and a reshuffle of Cabinet. Truss’ full cabinet is now in place – a useful overview of which can be found here. Key appointments for the sector are as follows:
- Michelle Donelan MP is the new Secretary of State for DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport), replacing Nadine Dorries MP who stepped down from the position.
- Ranil Jayawardena MP is the new Secretary of State for DEFRA (Department for Environment and Rural Affairs). He replaces George Eustice MP.
- Simon Clarke MP is the new Secretary of State for DLUHC (Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities), replacing Greg Clark MP in the position.
- Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP has been appointed Secretary of State for Transport. She replaces Grant Schapps MP in the position.
- Kit Malthouse MP is the new Secretary of State for Education, replacing James Cleverly MP who is the new Foreign Minister.
- Jacob Rees-Mogg MP is the new Secretary of State for BEIS (Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy), replacing Kwasi Kwarteng MP in the position. Also within this Department, Graham Stuart MP has been appointed Minister of State (Minister for Climate).
- Kwasi Kwarteng MP has been appointed as the new UK Chancellor.
We will continue to keep abreast of all new Ministerial appointments and continue to build relationships with Ministers and civil servants in key departments to ensure that heritage is considered across decision-making.
