Diversity Expo for construction industry

Employers will be able to find out how to attract a more diverse range of talent into their businesses and help ensure future growth at the Construction Diversity Expo 2011 on Monday 12 September at The Guildhall in London.

With an aging workforce and the number of young people in the industry more than halving since the recession started, CITB-ConstructionSkills said it was vital that the construction industry encouraged people from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds into the sector.

Despite significant progress on the equality and diversity agenda in construction, the latest figures for 2010 show that women, people from ethnic minority groups and disabled people remain under-represented in the industry.

Women make up just 13 per cent of the construction workforce whilst people from ethnic minority groups make up four per cent and people with disabilities make up13 per cent.  ?CITB-ConstructionSkills has joined forces with Women and Manual Trades (WAMT) to deliver the Expo, which will feature over 50 employers, training providers and business support organisations to help people who are under-represented in the sector with routes into local employment and training in construction.

Employers will be able to find out why diversity is good for business, how to build on best practice and improve diversity at the Expo conference, which will include several influential speakers and a range of workshops throughout the day.

The Diversity Construction Expo is organised and administered by lead sponsor, Women and Manual Trades, the national organisation for tradeswomen and women training in the trades.  Niki Luscombe, CEO, Women and Manual Trades, said: ’The Expo celebrates diversity best practice in the industry and opens up career opportunities for women, people from black ethnic communities and disabled people who may not have thought about working in construction before.’

The Conference for employers will take place at The Guildhall, London, on 12th September 2011 between10am and 2pm, while the FREE exhibition is open from 11am to 6pm.
