IHBC’s ‘Research’ CPD Signpost: Cathedrals Workshop Fellowship on… ‘Keeping heritage crafts alive in England’s cathedrals’

Cathedrals Workshop Fellowship has issued new research showing how ‘England’s cathedrals do not simply contain heritage craft… They sustain it.’

Cathedrals Workshop Fellowship writes:

… Why this research matters

Cathedral buildings depend upon living networks of craftspeople, specialist knowledge and long-term stewardship. The people who care for historic fabric bring together practical skill, an understanding of materials and the judgement to decide how and when to intervene. That expertise takes years to develop and needs opportunities to be passed on. CWF commissioned this research to understand training needs. It developed into a wider strategic examination of the conditions needed to sustain cathedral craft capacity nationally. Recruitment, retention and succession are connected to training pathways, supervision, workshops and facilities, funding and organisational capability. Long-term workforce planning and collaboration matter alongside the courses people attend.

The research recognises the value of cathedral workshops while acknowledging that needs differ between cathedrals. Apprenticeships remain important, but people also need opportunities to build experience, progress and keep learning throughout their careers. Sustaining craft expertise means supporting the people who teach and supervise, the places where learning happens and the partnerships that connect cathedral and wider conservation practice.
