The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the professional body for built and historic environment conservation specialists, has welcomed the recent report on heritage by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), ’Averting Crisis in Heritage’, highlighting in particular its proactive exploration of practical heritage management challenges and solutions.
Mike Brown, IHBC Policy Committee Chair, said: ’The CLA has produced a wide-ranging and challenging document that everyone with an interest in heritage must take seriously.’
‘In these times of unparalleled cutbacks, when across large parts of the country the very existence of a conservation service in local authorities is under threat, we have to be sure that heritage professionals, as much as clients, are doing all we can to ensure that our system works effectively.’
‘This document highlights the concerns of one of the sector’s biggest clients. We welcome especially the fact that the report takes great pains to suggest answers to problems, and not, as some less well-informed commentators are only too inclined to do, condemn the principles’.
Sean O’Reilly, IHBC Director, said: ‘As in any document intended to promote productive debate, no-one will agree with everything here. However there’s much of value in this important and challenging document. Already it has been the subject of detailed consideration by many parties, while there’s much here that the IHBC hopes to explore and progress in the widest partnerships across the business, construction, and heritage sectors’.
