The IHBC, the key professional body for historic environment conservation specialists, has welcomed Malcolm Cooper, Chief Inspector for Scotland’s national heritage agency, Historic Scotland, as the judge for the 2008 IHBC Gus Astley Annual Student Award.
Mr Cooper said: ‘I have a very strong interest in the way in which we train our professionals and prepare them for the complex business of understanding, managing and promoting our historic environment. This is a great opportunity for me to see this process in action and to support it.’
The Annual Student Award is a key to the IHBC’s support for conservation training and development. Dr Seán O’Reilly, IHBC Director, said ‘It is a real boost to have the importance of training in the sector recognised in Malcolm Cooper’s kind agreement to serve as judge for the 2008 awards. Students, as trainees or up-skilling professionals, need real help to develop careers in this highly skilled sector, not least as the recession leads to ever more losses in jobs and skills. We couldn’t hope for a stronger endorsement of all our educational efforts here than to have Historic Scotland’s Chief Inspector kindly agree to serve as judge.’
The IHBC’s award is inspired by the memory of Gus Astley, the former Membership Secretary. To enter, each year students on taught courses simply submit course work relevant to historic environment conservation at www.ihbc.org.uk The 2008 award results are due in April 2009, and candidates will present extracts of their work to conservation professionals from across the UK at the IHBC’s 2009 Annual School, in Buxton.
