Booking is now open for the 2020 IHBC Brighton School – including the Day School – from 18-20 June, on ‘OLD TOWNS : NEW FUTURES’ and sponsored by IHBC HESPR member Heritage Collective – which will explore some of the most urgent issues in our historic environment, with early bird fees open until 6pm on 21 April 2020.
Day School highlights:
- Keynotes from specialists with deep knowledge and skills that range across funding, government and community leadership:
- Carole Souter, on ‘Making space for everyone’, informed by leadership experience in heritage funding combined with her understanding shaped by extensive community volunteering, and
- British inspired, government-led urban revival with Dr Kris Declercq, Mayor of Roeselare in Belgium, on his first-hand experience of leading urban renewal, inspired by British thinking, while serving as an elected official: ‘Renewing Urban Centres: British strategies in action…’
- Expert and practical headline content
- the evolution of towns and the revolution of the communities
- The economics of urban regeneration and funding strategies
- ‘Experience’ as a guiding principle to help address the future challenges of our historic towns and urban areas

David McDonald, IHBC Chair, said: ‘I’m very pleased to see that once again, the IHBC is ahead of the game. Our South East Branch is hosting a timely Annual School which will delve into the problems besetting our ailing high streets and examine ways of making positive improvements. This event will be essential not only for those in the heritage sector but those involved in town planning, regeneration and town centre management’.

The IHBC’s South East Branch School Committee said: ‘We are really looking forward to welcoming delegates to Brighton’s famous seafront in June.’
‘The evolving nature of town centres continues to be an area full of challenges and opportunities, in which heritage plays a key part. The range of talks from top speakers will provide a very useful insight into this, looking both at the strategic and case study-focussed scales.‘
‘For those who can make the three days of Full School, the tours and extra events on offer will provide an opportunity to explore the region and get access to buildings and sites that are not normally available.’
IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘Since our Belfast School we have been re-focussing on the CPD priorities and content of our Schools. This year marks another step forward in tying our suite of CPD support to the needs of practitioners, to make sure each School makes as much difference to conservation as it possibly can, for delegates but also for all stakeholders.
‘All members are encouraged to use and promote the School website for current future CPD learning and guidance. Indeed with bursaries for economic support, and publications such as video recording and Spotlights on ToolBox Notes, our Schools leave more legacies for conservation learning than ever before.’
