Britain’s planners oppose Heathrow decision

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), representing 23,000 of Britain’s planners, opposes the decision announced today by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon to build a third runway at Heathrow airport. RTPI Policy Director Rynd Smith said: “This is a decision based on a six year old White paper and fails the essential test that major new transport facilities should be taken within the framework of an informed, integrated and up-to-date UK transport strategy that also takes full account of issues raised by communities in meaningful consultation. The RTPI is not against additional aviation development in principle but a historic opportunity for the government to demonstrate its commitment to better planning decision making has been lost by today’s announcement.’
