RTPI Research Awards 2018: shortlist announced

logoResearch into planning for different religions, urbanisation in Rwanda and Ethiopia, and Scottish marine planning are among the projects shortlisted in this year’s RTPI Awards for Research Excellence shortlist.

The RTPI writes:

Projects on heritage, build-to-rent housing, walkability and improving streets, have also been shortlisted, reflecting the diversity of issues research is currently trying to improve planning practice on.

Twenty projects have been shortlisted from a total of 67 entries – up nearly 20% on last year. They are competing across five categories: Planning Consultancy Award, Academic Award, Early Career Researcher Award, Student Award, and the Sir Peter Hall Award for Wider Engagement.

The Awards recognise and promote high quality, impactful spatial planning research from RTPI accredited planning schools, and planning consultancies around the world. This year’s shortlist includes research from across the UK, Hong Kong, China, South Africa, Canada and Ireland.

Tom Kenny, RTPI’s Acting Deputy Head of Policy and Research, said: ‘Each year we’ve run the RTPI Awards for Research Excellence the quality and variety of entries has grown. The Awards are one way the Institute is helping to promote outstanding research and ensure it helps to improve planning practice across the UK and Ireland.’

David Meaden, CEO at Idox plc said: ‘High-quality research is key to increasing our understanding of how planning can help create sustainable places for people to live and work. As the UK’s leading provider of planning and building control solutions to local authorities, Idox is very proud to be continuing our relationship with the RTPI and supporting the RTPI Awards for Research Excellence in 2018.’

Jonathan Manley, Planning & Urban Studies Journals Publisher at Routledge/Taylor & Francis, said: ‘As RTPI’s publisher, Routledge/T&F are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the RTPI Research Awards. RTPI’s mission to reward the best in planning research complements our own ambition to publish the work of not only those with an established reputation in the field but also scholars at the dawn of their career’.

The winners will be announced during the Planning Research Conference in Sheffield, held from 3-5 September 2018.
