English Heritage has part funded a feasibility study into the Grade II listed Plymouth Civic Centre.
Plymouth Civic Centre is being put up for sale by Plymouth City Council. English Heritage has part funded a feasibility study with the Council to explore the future of this striking Grade II listed building. We have been working closely with the Council and Avanti Architects, experts in the repair and re-use of 20th century buildings.
In a considered and objective manner, the study highlights the importance of the building and how it might be updated or changed. It is capable of being adapted for a number of new uses ensuring that the building has a viable and sustainable future and remains a key landmark in this significant post-war city centre.
The Avanti study highlights the flexibility of the tower and podium element of the complex for re-use, and looks at the exciting possibility of a new building on the adjacent car-park site, which could contribute to the future of the complex.
The building contains some notable interiors such as the Civic Suite which, as the report highlights, would be more sensitive to change. However the other office spaces have the potential to be adapted to a wide variety of uses, including residential or hotel. The study also looks at the opportunity to reinstate public access to the roof terrace at the top of the tower.
English Heritage has long recognised that Plymouth is special because it is one of the best examples of post-war town planning in the country and has the highest number of post-war listed buildings outside London. A successful adaptation of the Civic Centre could be central to widening appreciation of the city and its 20th century architecture.
