New Zealand heritage quakes

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the Canterbury Region, South Island, NZ, on Saturday 4 September (and subsequent aftershocks) has had a major impact on the historic heritage of the region.

Thankfully and amazingly, no human lives have been lost. While many unlisted/unregistered heritage buildings have been demolished, only a small number of historic places registered under the Historic Places Act 1993 are threatened with demolition due to major structural damage. There are, however, a large number of heritage buildings requiring repairs.

See the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) website for summary information, including an image gallery: LINK

The NZHPT has launched a fundraising campaign for donations to fund the repairs to the heritage buildings. These funds will be going towards the Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Building Fund: LINK
