Harrow Council planning committee has given the go-ahead to proposals to redevelop what was the site of the nerve centre of the Battle of Britain into a housing scheme plus a new museum dedicated to the memory of The Few.
More than 90 flats and houses are planned to be built in the grounds of RAF Bentley Priory in Stanmore, and part of the house will become apartments for private sale.
The 18th-century mansion house, once home to Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV, became more famous for its pivotal role as the headquarters of RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
The conditions for planning consent include a £10m donation from the developers to set up a museum to be run by the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust, which will highlight the RAF’s role and the aircrews’ sacrifices.
