Historic England (HE) is inviting heritage sector organisations to participate in a scheme to increase the diversity of the heritage workforce. The scheme is aimed at undergraduates or very recent graduates who identify as having Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic Heritage, closing 19 January.
HE writes:
Interested organisations should complete a simple expression of interest form in relation to the Positive Action Training Placements by 19th January 2018. HE are inviting historic environment organisations to participate in their scheme to increase workforce diversity in the sector. Please note this information is for Historic Environment Sector organisations. The placement scheme will be open for students to apply to from March 2018.
We’d like historic environment sector organisations to join us in creating a more representative and more relevant workforce. Please see the documents below for details on how the scheme will work and to express interest in participating.
Background
In 2016-2017 only 4.3% of the Historic England work force described their ethnicity as Black Asian of Minority Ethnic (BAME). In March 2016 the Government published the Culture White Paper and challenged Historic England and other nationally funded cultural organisations to develop and share strategies for improving workforce diversity. In response Historic England developed a Workforce Diversity Strategy which has several strands of activity but one of the most significant is a new paid Heritage Training Placements scheme for undergraduates and recent graduates with Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic Heritage. In 2016 we began the scheme with four placements in London. In 2017 this was expanded to 12 placements across our offices in London, Birmingham, Manchester, York and Bristol. We have evaluated the scheme thoroughly and are now ready to extend the scheme across the wider Heritage Sector.
