Historic England (HE) is investigating the heritage of Islamic places of worship in England, and asks if IHBC members, colleagues and networks can help identify more listed buildings now in use as mosques.
Formerly St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, now Wembley Central Mosque, Ealing Road, Wembley, listed Grade II. The List entry does not currently reflect the building’s re-use.
Historic England writes:
Historic England is investigating the heritage of Islamic places of worship in England. Several purpose-built mosques are currently under assessment for listing and we are reviewing the List entries for some early examples of historic buildings converted to use as mosques.
Up to 80% of mosques in this country are conversions of previously existing building types, such as houses, churches, cinemas and public halls, mostly found in and around the centres of major towns, but we have yet to build a picture of how many examples are on the List, some having only recently been converted. We would like to hear from you if you know of any listed buildings currently or historically in use as mosques within your area, with a view to us updating their List entries.
Please email us at listing.enquiries@HistoricEngland.org.uk and put PoW Mosques in the subject line.
Thank you for your input.
