IHBC highlights international RMI: Eiffel Tower to receive €300m, 15-year revamp

Eiffel Tower - Designing Buildings WikiThe Mayor of Paris has proposed a Repair, Maintenance and Improvement (RMI) programme to help care for the fabric of this iconic structural masterpiece as well improve security, reduce queues and protect visitors from adverse weather.

The plans aim to ‘enhance this emblematic monument which has a central role in the tourist attraction of Paris’ and will be submitted to the next Paris Council being held on 30 January-1 February 2017. They will mean an investment of €20m per annum, an increase from the current €13.7m.

The plans are being proposed at a time when Paris is due to bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024 and the Universal Exhibition of 2025. Other improvements include creating new reception spaces and improve visitor flows, modernising the lower second floor and part of the elevators and extensive painting.

The Eiffel Tower, inaugurated and commissioned for the Universal Exposition claims to be the most visited paid monument in the world with six million visitors per year.
