The repair of a set of sash-and-case windows in Aberdeen’s west end highlights 19th-century ingenuity and the need to take care of what might be lost when replacing windows, says Douglas Campbell in his recent article in IHBC’s Context No 147.
In his article titled A revolutionary window mechanism?, Campbell discusses deaths caused by cleaning early sash windows and the drive for safer opening systems, one of which could be found in a listed building in Aberdeen. He also looks at lessons learned from the project and the risks of deskilling through the loss of joinery practice.
