Today the Chair of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), Dave Chetwyn, announced the opening of the booking for the IHBC’s 2010 Annual School, the major training event in the conservation calendar.
The IHBC’s 2010 Annual School will examine ‘Delivering excellence in conservation’ under the title ‘Going for Gold’ and will take place in London, over 10-12 June, and centre on the stand-alone Day School on Friday 11 June.
Dave Chetwyn said: “This year’s Annual School is a unique and important opportunity to focus on how we can best manage our historic places as resources using conservation services. We’re especially delighted that Loyd Grossman will provide the keynote address, and firmly place the focus on local communities, the people who most rely on the conservation services provided by our members.
We’ll be looking at what our members do to promote the right sort of development – for example in heritage-led regeneration, as much as the way conservation services can work alongside change to help deliver the best outcomes. Clearly the IHBC is the body best placed to lead the thinking that is required to secure the real potential of our historic and valued places.”
Sheila Stones, IHBC Vice Chair and lead organiser, said: “London has such a wide range of excellent examples of conservation where expertise has been applied to conserve historic buildings used for a variety of leisure purposes. This way we can remind everyone that conservation improves the quality of all our lives in lots of different ways, as well as show them how it can be done.”
David McDonald, IHBC London Branch Chair and co-organiser said: “Our expert speakers will look at best practice in the provision of conservation services and examine the practical solutions adopted to enhance and improve our places. So the School will not only provide delegates with answers as to how conservation services can best operate, but also warn them of the potential pitfalls.
We’re inviting members, non-members and anyone with an interest in how we manage our special places to learn about current initiatives and new approaches to conservation services, how they work, and how they might and should operate.”
The main venue is the remarkable, Grade 1 listed, Royal College of Physicians designed by Sir Denys Lasdun; a magnificent modern setting which also operates as an award winning conference venue, situated next to Regent’s Park.
Tours will visit major conservation and heritage-led projects across London, covering everything from the impact of the Olympics to the conservation opportunities created by re-branding places.
