The new planning regime for nationally significant infrastructure was ‘switched on’ for the energy and transport sectors on 1 March.
Any infrastructure proposals in these sectors above the thresholds set by the Planning Act 2008 will now have to go to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) for development consent. This new, single consent will replace the need to obtain various consents under the previous regime (such as planning permission and listed buildings consent).
It is the intention to switch on the regime for the waste water and hazardous waste sectors from April 2011, and the water supply sector from April 2012.
Further appointments to the IPC have also been announced today. More information on these and the switching-on of the new regime is available at www.communities.gov.uk/news/corporate/1489232.
