IHBC & partners in Belfast, 9 May: Preparing for the 2018 IHBC School as John Edwards says: ‘It’s Not Just Retrofit’
The IHBC Northern Ireland (NI) Branch and partners, the UAHS (Ulster Architectural Heritage Society) and RSUA (Royal Society of Ulster Architects), host a ‘Retrofit’ presentation and discussion led by IHBC trustee John Edwards in Belfast on 9 May, from 5-7pm, linked to planning for the Branch’s hosting of the IHBC Annual School, which will take place in Belfast in June 2018.

High Court quashes PP for 5-bed home for third time: challenges include definitions of ‘village’ and ‘limited infilling’
Northumberland Council has seen its grant of planning permission for a five-bed home quashed by the High Court for a third time, part of a sequence of successful challenges linked to Green Belt and Local Plan policy, as well as definitions of a ‘village’ in national planning policy and interpretations of ‘limited infilling’.

Measures to unlock brownfield land for thousands of homes across England
Councils in England will have new tools to speed up development of derelict and underused land for new homes as communities will be able to highlight local derelict or underused building sites that are primed for redevelopment using registers linked to the recently published Housing White Paper.

IHBC consultation response to HE’s revision of Maintenance and Repair of Traditional Farm Buildings
The IHBC has submitted its response to the consultation draft from Historic England (HE) on its revision of The Maintenance and Repair of Traditional Farm Buildings, aimed at offering practical advice to farmers and other users, noting among numerous detailed comments that ‘Changes within this guidance emphasise the landscape and setting context of traditional farm buildings.’

UN Security Council adopts historic resolution for the protection of heritage
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted the historic resolution 2347 – the first ever resolution adopted by the Security Council to focus on Cultural heritage – in which it ‘Deplores and condemns the unlawful destruction of cultural heritage, inter alia destruction of religious sites and artefacts, as well as the looting and smuggling of cultural property from archaeological sites, museums, libraries, archives, and other sites, in the context of armed conflicts, notably by terrorist groups…’

£40M cash boost for England’s coast
Over 30 exciting new projects are set to create new jobs, attract tourists and boost economic growth – including improvements to the Grade II listed pier at Southport and the transformation of a partly derelict green space and seafront promenade into a visitor destination that celebrates cultural heritage and location at Lowestoft – as communities up and down England’s coast are set to benefit from a £40 million cash boost.

Councillors in Glasgow have rejected controversial plans – recommended by officers – for a student accommodation block next to Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Category A-listed Glasgow School of Art, with reasons including that it ‘could harm a future bid for World Heritage Site (WHS) status for the GSA.’
