IHBC 2016 School update: Edinburgh councillors unanimously reject Royal High School hotel plans
Delegates from the IHBC’s 2016 School in Worcester will remember the lively debate around Edinburgh’s heritage and commercial and hotel development, led by BEFS Director Euan Leitch and architect James Simpson, and may be especially interested to hear that even the revised plans to convert the Calton Hill landmark ‘Royal High School’ into a luxury hotel have been emphatically rejected by councillors, in line with city officers’ recommendations, and with many speaking in support of the effective management and care of the city and its heritage.

JPICH Heritage in Changing Environments pre-call announcement: 4.5 million Euros for transnational proposals
The Joint Programming Initiative in Cultural Heritage and Global Change has announced a new funding opportunity of 4.5 million Euros for ‘transnational proposals’ with areas covered including ‘changing political and cultural environments’ and ‘environmental deterioration’.

Scottish Government Climate Change Bill – Consultation Paper
This paper from the Scottish Government (SG) contains proposals for a new Climate Change Bill, to amend only those parts of the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 that relate to emission reduction targets and associated reporting duties with a public consultation closing on 22 September.

The Welsh Streets: a transforming moment as first restored houses opened
Prolonged battles by SAVE and partners to prevent the needless and wasteful destruction of tens of thousands of decent terraced houses in the north of England has received triumphant vindication with the opening in August 2017 of the first restored houses in Liverpool’s Welsh Streets.

Workmen accidentally start roof fire at Edinburgh Cat A/WHS hotel
Workmen are believed to have caused a major fire scare after setting alight the roof of a luxury Category A listed hotel, the Nira Caledonia on Gloucester Place in Edinburgh’s New Town and World Heritage Site.
