IHBC on heritage from the doorstep: Telegraph owners accused of ‘washing hands’ of historic GI listed Leeds mill as new deal saves building

Leeds MillGrade I (GI) listed Temple Works flax mill, which once boasted the biggest room in the world, had been put up for auction with no reserve after years of neglect, leading to local accusations of a ‘washing of hands’ of heritage responsibilities by the billionaire owners of the Telegraph, the Barclay brothers, but now Leeds property developer CEG has agreed to buy the building the day before it was due to sold at auction in a last-minute deal welcomed by Leeds City Council and Leeds Civic Trust.

Country Life Nov 2017 coverCountry Life, the celebrated weekly on heritage and things social and rural, has reported cornflake confusion for columnist Athena, as heritage adviser and IHBC research consultant Bob Kindred explained the background to her realisation that ‘the number of conservation officers in England has fallen by more than a third’ in recent years, and ‘Scandalously, more than 30 councils don’t employ one at all’, as she calls on the Government ‘to make it clear to councils that conservation officers provide a statutory service.’

HE reveals overwhelming public support for saving England’s Mills
