City of Bath plans tourist levy to support heritage, arts and culture
Councillors in Bath are looking to cash in on the 5.8 million tourists that visit the historic city each year, with plans to introduce a bed tax that could raise millions of pounds for the British UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Commons DCMS Committee launches inquiry into social impact of participation in culture and sport
The House of Commons Select Committee on Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) launched a new inquiry on 17 January 2018 to investigate ways in which taking part in the arts, cultural activities and sport can have a positive impact on health, community and education.

Whitby’s East Pier footbridge to be rebuilt to link to GII pier
A footbridge linking Whitby’s East Pier to an extension is to be replaced 17 years after it was first removed as Scarborough Council has given consent for a new bridge between the extension and the Grade II-listed pier.

EU Commission proposals on VAT rates published
On January 18 2018, the European Commission made a proposal to introduce more flexibility for Member States to change the VAT rates they apply to different products and this has now been submitted to the European Parliament and the European Economic and Social Committee for consultation and to the Council for adoption.

IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Former Victorian public baths to be transformed into new Bristol swimming pool
The Bristol Post has explored how Jacob’s Wells Baths, a historic bathhouse in Bristol, has been given a new lease of life after plans to reopen as a swimming pool and leisure facility were approved and it will reopen in a few years.
