MHCLG consultation on draft regulations for improving the use of planning conditions
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) has published a consultation on draft regulations for improving the use of planning conditions setting out circumstances when a pre-commencement planning condition can be imposed without the written agreement of the applicant.

Report on how Liverpool might save its World Heritage Status
Liverpool Council, together with government and Historic England, has drafted a Desired State of Conservation Report (DSOCR) which describes the corrective measures Liverpool is proposing to protect the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the site which the city hopes will persuade UNESCO to remove the site from the ‘in danger’ list.

AHRC and EPSRC to fund 32 projects leading on future immersive experiences
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have announced the funding of 32 new research projects, exploring the future of ‘immersive experiences’, ranging from using VR to recreate the benefits of outdoor group singing, to exploring new immersive Circus experiences and allowing museum goers to virtually peruse priceless ancient texts that would otherwise be off limits.

CMS Committee on ‘Impact of Brexit’ on the creative, tourism and digital industries
The Culture Media and Sport (CMS) Select Committee has released its report on the potential impact of Brexit on the creative, tourism and digital industries, which notes that development of a new system of entry to the UK for European Economic Area(EEA) visitors will be a key aspect of the UK’s relationship with the EU after Brexit.

Cadw reminder: Heritage Impact Statements now needed
Cadw has published its reminder that owners must now submit a heritage impact statement with any listed building or conservation area consent application, a requirement in force since 1 September 2017, when it replaced a similar one for a supporting design and access statement in the listed building consent process.

BEFS’ Planning (Scotland) Bill – response & overview update
The Planning (Scotland) Bill appeared in December 2017, a little over 2 years since the independent panel carried out a ‘game-changing review of Scotland’s planning system’, and BEFS now offers a response and overview of the built environment sector’s responses and reactions to the Bill, concluding that ‘The planning ‘game’ is not significantly changed… and the vision for Scotland’s planning system in the 21st Century is found wanting – for both the private sector, and communities of place and interest’.

Allchurches Trust dispersed £15M grants 2017
Allchurches Trust, one of the UK’s largest grant-makers, announced on 19 January that over the course of 2017 it gave grants totalling £15.6 million, its largest sum ever, to 1,324 churches, charities and communities across the UK and Ireland, and including £2 million of grants to Methodist churches and causes from the Trust’s newly established Methodist Fund.
