2018 School Bursaries: ‘Money is not the barrier’ – £3750 still available to support delegates needing support
Up to £3750 of bursary places (mainly for the Day School) are still available for the IHBC’s 2018 School in Belfast on 21-23 June, themed on ‘Our Shared Heritage’ and offering some of the best heritage learning and CPD around: up to 9 hours for the Day School and AGM and up to 24 hours over the 3-day Full School, including networking.

‘After opening’: IHBC, Felton and Donald Insall Associates Architects on Kew’s Temperate House on DBW’s Home Page
To commemorate the opening of Decimus Burton’s monumental Temperate House precinct at the Unesco World Heritage Site of Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, reopened on 3 May 2018 after a 5-year, £41 million restoration project, Designing Buildings Wiki has featured on its Home Page the article on that evolving project that appeared IHBC’s Context from May 2016, written by Aimée Felton, an associate at Donald Insall Associates Architects.

BEFS updates on HES Policy Statement workshop

World Heritage UK welcomes change of mood on Liverpool’s World Heritage Site
World Heritage UK, the body representing all 31 UK World Heritage Sites, has acknowledged that, in response to UNESCO’s concerns, Liverpool City Council and Peel Holdings have together recently taken three positive initiatives to minimise the risk of Liverpool losing World Heritage Status.

Scotland’s ‘Understanding planning ‘jargon’’ briefing by SPICe
A new briefing note by SPICe (The Scottish Parliament Infromation Cente) provides short definitions of commonly used planning terms and abbreviations, characterised as jargon but with each interpretation qualified as being ‘brief summary of what are often complex matters, many of which have very exact legal meanings’.

Victorian ‘dead house’ in Powys is saved from ruin by grant
A ‘dead house’ where bodies were kept in Victorian times before burial is to be saved from ruin as part of the Grade II-listed St Cynog’s church in Boughrood, Powys, that was rebuilt in the 19th Century, is to receive a £50,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

IHBC’s Student Awards for 2017 now out: Gus Astley Student Award and commendations at Belfast School in 2018
The winner of the IHBC Gus Astley Student Award for 2017 has been announced as Rodolfo Acevedo Rodríguez, then on the IHBC-recognised conservation course at University of Cambridge, for his work on the history, design and function of Thornton Abbey Gatehouse, Lincolnshire, selected by the judge for the year, Carole Souter CBE, as a ‘clear, informative, well researched and beautifully produced and illustrated’ representation of current conservation-related course work.
