RTPI: Planning absent from top table in 83% of councils in the UK, despite statutory function
The planning function has been relegated to lower positions in the corporate structure of local authorities across the UK, a new survey by the RTPI has revealed, as it finds that the head of planning is a member of the top management team in only 17% of councils in the UK, despite the fact that planning is, like social services and education, a statutory function.

ChurchCare: Further Faculty Rules consultation – closes 6 August
ChurchCare, the Church of England’s national resource supporting parishes, dioceses and cathedrals caring for their buildings, is consulting on revisions to internal procedures for fabric management, under their Faculty Rules, in order to ‘increase their simplification’, with the consultation closing on 6 August.

Unesco announces range of new World Heritage Sites
Mountain monasteries in South Korea, a Saudi oasis and Mumbai’s art deco buildings are among a number of sites to make it on to Unesco’s World Heritage List, reports the BBC.

New UK parliamentary group – APPG – formed on good design and placemaking, supported by by ACE
A new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) has been formed to ensure housing issues are prioritised, with the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) providing the secretariat and leading discussion on proposals from an ACE report, launched on the same date, Unlocking Housing: Reinvigorating Local Communities through Placemaking.

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) failures cost Balfour Beatty £695,000
Contractor Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions has been fined £500,000 with costs of £195,000 for exposing workers to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) over a nine-year period and failing to report cases of HAVS that arose.

Sites of suffragette protest and sabotage recognised in England’s lists
Some 41 places across England that were at the centre of suffragette action – from mass meetings and smashed windows to prison hunger strikes and post box fires – have been officially recognised within England’s national listings, while the grave of Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the suffragettes, has been upgraded to II*.

IHBC update: ‘Urgent support needed in bid for c.50 doctoral studies on timber & construction – Responses to Bangor University before 15 July’
A university consortium bid, relating to timber in construction, aims to provide EngD and PhD places for 50 students starting over the next 5 years, part funded by EPSRC, and urgently needs letters from SME’s demonstrating need, so IHBC members and networks with interests in timber related design / conservation work are encouraged to submit letters of support and need to Graham Ormondroyd, Bangor University, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 2DG or g.ormondroyd@bangor.ac.uk, by Sunday 15 July 2018.

FMB: Nearly 80% of builders and consumers support licensing construction
Almost 80% of builders and home owners are calling on the Government to introduce a licensing scheme for the UK construction industry to stamp out rogue traders once and for all, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

HLF ‘Policy Directions’ consultation
Government is consulting on the ‘Policy Directions’ for The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) – the largest dedicated funder of the UK’s heritage – ‘which are being revised following a recommendation in the Tailored Review of the HLF carried out in 2017’ with the consultation closing on 29 July 2018.

‘Building More, Building Beautiful’ report calls for more ‘traditional’ design and style, because ‘Traditional beauty can overcome Nimbyism’
Policy Exchange – a UK think tank – has published a new report ‘Building More, Building Beautiful’, co-authored by conservative philosopher Sir Roger Scruton and former Labour Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, arguing that ‘design and style can unlock the housing crisis’, and encouraging ‘plans [that] better reflect people’s desire for traditional building design, like Victorian terraces and Georgian blocks’, because ‘Traditional beauty can overcome Nimbyism.’
