Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has agreed with the recommendations of a planning inspector and allowed on appeal a biomass fuelled combined heat and power plant for an animal rendering factory located on the edge of Low Marnham village near Newark originally refused by Bassetlaw District Council and despite the ‘less than substantial harm’ to listed buildings including Grade 1 Listed St Wilfred’s Church.
Pickles’ decision letter acknowledged that the scheme breached local policies designed to safeguard landscape character and would result in less than substantial harm to listed buildings including Grade 1 Listed St Wilfred’s Church.
However, the Secretary of State concluded that the benefits of the project – ‘a valuable if modest contribution to the delivery of the Government’s climate change programme and energy policies’ – outweighed its disadvantages.
