NTS members debate the future of heritage

The National Trust for Scotland has launched a debate with its 320,000 members concerning its future.

Entitled ‘A Place for Heritage?’ the debate is an examination of the different factors and issues that might influence the role of the Trust in modern Scotland. It is hoped that the debate will form part of a consultative process that will lead to the charity developing a new strategy and long-term vision to take effect from 2016/17.

According to the NTS, the debate comes at a challenging time for Scotland’s Heritage with continued funding cuts, pointing to the need for a more co-ordinated approach to managing Scotland’s key heritage sites. The debate centres on four main themes:

  • whether there should be a National Heritage Collection
  • Heritage for Communities
  • Making Heritage Accessible, and
  • Heritage and Tourism after 2014.

A central theme in the debate is whether Scotland should have a National Heritage Collection, which Brian Ferguson writing in the Scotsman has suggested would allow the NTS a greater access to funds from the Scottish Government, Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
