A one day seminar on the conservation of traditional thatch is being held at Cressing Temple, Essex, on 15 October, with a splendid array of speakers and guides on hand, while IHBC members are able to access substantial discounts for themselves and linked non-IHBC members in local government.
The event is being organised by English Heritage in partnership with the East Anglia (EA) Branch of the IHBC and the Conservation of Traditional Thatch Group (CoTTG). There are subsidies for to non-IHBC local authority staff accompanying IHBC members.
The impressive list of speakers includes:
- John Letts (archeo-botanist and co-author of the English Heritage research transactions Thatching in England 1790 – 1940)
- Stephen Letch (East Anglian Master Thatcher and thatching straw grower)
- Keith Quantrill (thatching consultant and former Master Thatcher)
- Alison Henry (Building Conservation and Research Team, English Heritage, and IHBC member)
Workshops will include sessions on archaeological and documentary records, regional variations in thatch, threats to thatch and options for material sourcing.
The session on conservation in action dealing with applications for listed building consent for a change of material or method, and handling appeals will be particularly useful for members who work in development control or advise on listed building applications.
Discounts are being offered for IHBC members. IHBC members may also reserve an additional place at the discounted rate for a local authority colleague (conservation officer, planner, building control officer or elected member) who is not an IHBC member.
