Fiona Hyslop MSP, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, will deliver the keynote address at the Institute of Historic Building Conservation’s Annual School in Edinburgh in June.
Welcoming the theme for the School, on ‘The Art of Conservation’ Ms Hyslop said in her letter of acceptance: ‘It is an exciting time for Scotland as we look to the referendum in September 2014; whilst devolution has demonstrated the value we place on our culture, creative economy and historic environment for their intrinsic worth as well as for the wider benefits they bring.’
IHBC Chair Mike Brown said: ‘We are extremely honoured that the Cabinet Secretary has found time in her busy diary to agree to speak to our School in June, especially given the kind of leading position both she and the Scottish Government have taken in discussions around heritage, and not least their explicit promotion of the benefits of VAT relief for building repairs.’
‘She will explore topics ranging from the Scottish culture to nationhood, the latter already prefaced in the recent issue of our member journal Context, so we’ll have ample preparation both for the School’s challenging topic, ‘The art of conservation’, and the exciting visits planned by our Scotland Branch.’
IHBC Scotland Branch Chair Stuart Eydmann said: ‘The presence of the Cabinet Secretary is an excellent addition to our busy programme of talks, networking, and visits, as the Branch’s School Committee continues its preparation of the usual high-quality and diverse CPD for members and colleagues. From international scholars such as Jukka Jokilehto to masterplanners like Mike Galloway in Dundee, there’s lots to be learnt and experienced even before the networking and visits start.’
