Cumbrian wind farm rejected on ‘visual’ grounds

Plans for a six-turbine wind farm near the village of Frizington, Cumbria, have been refused on landscape and visual grounds by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles on the recommendation of the planning inspector who held the recovered inquiry.

Developer Banks Renewables scheme for a 12-megawatt facility had been rejected by Copeland Borough Council.

The decision letter made it clear he agreed with the inspector that the wind farm would cause significant adverse harm to landscape character ‘in its own right and cumulatively’ because of two other wind farms in the locality.

He agreed that siting the turbines on the ridge and west facing slope of Weddicar Rigg ‘would inevitably detract from the landscape’s wild and open character’. The minister also concluded that the landscape impacts could not be made ‘acceptable’.
