The Department for Transport (DfT) has just published the Government’s draft national policy statement (NPS) for national road and rail networks. The document will now be out for consultation until 24 February 2014.
At the same time the DfT has published a sustainability assessment incorporating both a strategic environmental assessment of its proposals and an analysis of the NPS in terms of the EU habitats and wild birds directive.
Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said the NPS ‘provides the right balance between a well-connected and high performing road and rail network with sufficient capacity to meet the country’s long term needs, whilst protecting the environment and minimising social impacts’.
