Heritage Counts 2013 now out: ‘Skills’

‘Heritage Counts’, the annual survey of the state of England’s historic environment produced by English Heritage (EH) on behalf of the Historic Environment Forum, has been launched, and for 2013 it takes as its theme ‘Skills’.

EH writes:
This year ‘Heritage Counts’ focuses on skills in the historic environment. New research has revealed that nearly half of all organisations feel their workforce is currently lacking skills and most do not have a training budget.

‘Heritage Counts 2013’ explores the theme of skills in various pieces of research:

·   A literature review, bringing together previous research on skills in the historic environment.

·   Research into the skills of historic environment specialists in local authorities.

·   A survey of skills gaps and shortages across the historic environment and cultural heritage sector.

·   Findings from the latest update ‘Repair, Maintenance and Retrofit of Traditional Building Skills’.

In addition to the data on skills, ‘Heritage Counts’ summarises the key policy changes from the last year and reports on a wide range of indicators for the historic environment.
