The ‘Significance’ issue of Context, membership journal of The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), has been posted online, featuring reviews of the programme from the IHBC’s 2012 Annual School in Winchester.
Online access to Context is free to all, but posting only happens about six months after publication.
The newest online issue of Context reports on the IHBC’s 2012 Annual School, covering the role of ‘significance’ in built and cultural heritage management. Though increasingly applied in casework, the loose connections between ‘significance’ and the statutory framework for protection across the UK meant that there has been a huge interest across practitioners and disciplines in the application and interpretation of the term.
The School, which extended over three days of tours, talks and networks, boasted a diverse range of speakers and guides covering all aspects of ‘significance’ as a term still relatively new to many heritage interests.
Original resources created through the School, such as presentations, are already available on line through the IHBC’s website for its Schools programme. However the IHBC’s regular journal report on its School in Context, that takes place each September, allows for a more substantial digest of the wide-ranging issues and themes explored at the event.
IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘If you want to keep up to date on current conservation issues be sure to look into the IHBC’s member services and benefits. Our School in Winchester confirmed just how flexible and forward thinking the sector remains when dealing with new thinking or practices, despite the narrow political priorities our members face and the appalling economic circumstances that surround us!’
‘And, as our 2013 School on ‘Skills’ approaches in June, the online issue from 2012 also provides a timely reminder about how critical the IHBC’s Annual School is to the development of competent conservation specialists. It also ensures that any heritage and building practitioners attending can become more able to deal with the challenges they face in their own professions. So we’re especially grateful to English Heritage for it’s ongoing support of the School’s programme’.
