Icon to undertake new study of the conservation workforce

Icon has been awarded funding for its Conservation Workforce Intelligence Research Project which will identify the nature of employment and work for professional conservators across the UK in 2012-13.

ICON writes:
This project has been generously supported by Arts Council England, English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. We are delighted by this endorsement of Icon to carry out this much-needed research. ??Icon is leading on a sector-wide National Conservation Education & Skills Strategy. A wide-ranging consultation on the Strategy identified the absence of up-to-date workforce intelligence for conservation that has meant that the sector has previously relied on out-of-date or anecdotal evidence of skills needs in conservation. ??This project will collate and review information that has already been gathered about the nature of the conservation workforce across the UK.

This will be combined with new data that will be collected by surveying employers in both the private and public sectors to identify the profile of their workforces and their skills needs for the next five years. ??The data will provide a benchmark for measuring the success of the Strategy and a foundation for effective advocacy. Acquiring and using this labour market intelligence will allow museums and the conservation sector to plan and prioritise actions that will sustain and support a skilled and diverse conservation workforce.
