Refurbishment projects needed for BREEAM pilot

Refurbishment projects – particularly public-sector building and small-scale fit out projects – are being sought to help with the development of the new BREEAM Non-Domestic Refurbishment scheme, and they will join a pilot programme that currently involves 14 buildings of various types and sizes from around the UK (including retail, office, industrial, education and healthcare premises), a number of which are listed buildings.

BRE writes:
We have recently commenced piloting the scheme with 14 buildings of various types and size from around the UK. This includes retail, office, industrial, education and healthcare buildings – and includes a number of listed buildings. We are also still seeking further pilot projects. Details of how to get involved are outlined in the information leaflet on the right of this page.

The pilot aims to identify the opportunities and barriers for sustainable refurbishment, to test out the criteria and inform the science base – something that is at the core of all BREEAM schemes.

The pilots include major refurbishment projects including a building on the Co-operative’s NOMA redevelopment site in Manchester, high profile office buildings in central London, a major department store and several university buildings. Two of the fit-out projects include a company HQ in London and a retail store. Development of the fit-out aspect will build on and improve the BREEAM 2008 fit-out methodology which is already available. Further details of the pilots will be announced soon, along with details of how you can get involved through the consultation process.

The official go-live date for the scheme along with details about assessor training will be announced once the scheme has been fully developed, piloted and peer reviewed.

For further information please download the BREEAM Non Domestic Refurbishment Pilot Leaflet from the web page. If you have any questions or have decided you would like to go ahead with full pilot certification or the pilot ‘lite’ option, please contact BRE via BREEAM@bre.co.uk
