‘Thank you, Newcastle! This year’s conference brought together conservation professionals from across the UK, and beyond, for three wonderful days of learning, exploring, and connecting.
From a stunning Welcome Reception at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the range of fascinating site visits which included our delegates donning their hard hats and boots on a live site at Keelmen’s Hospital, to thought-provoking sessions from brilliant speakers at the Day School in The Common Room, and the celebratory Annual Dinner and Awards presentations at Royal Station Hotel Newcastle, this was truly an Annual School to remember.

The IHBC writes:
Welcome to the July 2026 edition of the IHBC CPD Circular. This issue follows closely on the heels of the very successful IHBC Annual School, held in Newcastle in conjunction with the IHBC North Branch. If you missed it, further details on the availability of the recording made of the Day School event are featured below. The IHBC is delighted to thank all contributors, participants, sponsors, network partners, exhibitors and, especially, our RTPI 2026 School Friends, all of whom have helped make our Annual School in Newcastle, such a success.
Branch News
July begins with a joint IHBC London Branch and Georgian Group event held in the Library at The Georgian Group in Fitzroy Square. Representatives from the National Amenity Societies will provide a brief update on current casework and campaigns, and IHBC London Branch will outline their events planned for later in 2026. This will be followed by drinks and networking. The event will be held on Thursday 2 July 2026, from 17:00-19:30, and is free to attend. Those wishing to book please contact Claire Hegarty (London Branch, Branch Consultant) at LOconsultant@ihbc.org.uk.
On 15 July West Midlands IHBC Branch are holding an in-person CPD day at Ledbury Heritage Centre/The Old Grammar, Ledbury. The title for the day is ‘Mighty Oaks- understanding and conserving timber buildings (assessment, inspection, decay, and repair)’. The day will cover ‘Herefordshire Timber Framing – What Marks it Out as Special?; Timber frame repair projects; Mechanisms of decay; Assessment and inspection of timber buildings and end with a lecture on ‘The conservation of The Master’s House, Ledbury by architect Gary Butler (see The History of The Master’s House). Gary will talk about the project to conserve and regenerate the grade II* listed Master’s House as a hub of social and cultural life in Ledbury. He will then lead a tour, and talk about the conservation approach to the project, which adopted the principle that the extraordinary medieval fabric was the most significant element of the building. The day will cost £25 for members and £35 for non- members which is exceptional value for such a full CPD day.
IHBC South East Branch have a technical morning on Thursday 16 July 2026, to be held at Farnham Museum. The event entitled ‘Dealing with Rubbers: Repairing an early 18th century gauged brickwork façade’ will provide a rare and unique opportunity to view at close hand ongoing sensitive brickwork repairs, including the entire rebuilding of the parapet and cornice being undertaken as part of extensive repair works taking place to the façade of Farnham Museum (aka Wilmer House) a Grade I listed building, dating to 1718, built for local hop merchant John Thorne and now owned by Waverley Borough Council. The entire frontage of the building is constructed in rubbed brick and was described by architectural historian Nathanial Lloyd ‘perhaps the most beautiful example extant of the Doric order interpreted in brick.’ There are some good sections of panelling internally as part of the museum which has a slightly unusual plan. This is a member only event and there is a fee of £10.78/per person.
Looking ahead, on 18 August, IHBC Wales Branch are organising a hard hat tour of the National Slate Museum, Llanberis. This is an exciting, and cost free opportunity, to see conservation in action as the National Slate Museum undergoes a significant redevelopment project. Join Conservation Architect Elinor Gray-Williams and contractor MPH for a tour of conservation works at the National Slate Museum as it undergoes significant redevelopment works.
We will explore how decisions have been made to balance the conservation of the 19th Century workshops, several of which still contain historic machinery and tools, with telling the story of the international slate industry. Discussions will include how the project has developed with the input of historic environment professionals to take full account of the site’s grade 1 Listing, Scheduled Monument status, and inclusion in the World Heritage Site.
Lastly, booking is now open for the South West Branch Partnership CPD day on Fire Protection and Regulations. The event is being held on 19 November, at Exeter Guild Hall, a wonderful Grade I listed building.
