IHBC Branch Events

The IHBC North West Branch are holding a free online lunch time webinar on Tuesday 5 May focusing on the Conservation of the Great Laxey Wheel, Isle of Man. John-Paul Walker, Historic Buildings Architect for Manx National Heritage, will share his experience of the challenges and opportunities encountered in keeping the largest working water wheel in the world working during the 3-year conservation project that drew on a wide range of conservation techniques and engineering ingenuity.

John-Paul remarked: ‘It must be the most complex conservation project I’ve ever undertaken as a conservation architect – A structure of timber, iron and stone with no roof, water poured over it all day and it moves!’

On Wednesday 20 May the IHBC North Branch and RTPI North East are holding a joint day conference entitled ‘Historic Towns New Futures’. The event will showcase Darlington’s heritage-led regeneration in a market town with a proud history and an eye firmly on the future.

Speakers with backgrounds in planning and heritage will lead talks, walks and tours, focusing on the power of the historic environment as a cultural and economic asset and will explore design coding, large scale visions and local interventions to stimulate, inspire, and inform new ways of working.

Lastly in terms of CPD planning, looking ahead to 8 June, IHBC Yorkshire Branch in association with The Building Limes Forum, York Minster and York Conservation Trust are holding a two-day symposium entitled ‘The Essentials of Traditional Mortar Preparation, Performance and Use’.  The programme offers a packed 2 days of talks and hands-on practical demonstrations, with an all-encompassing range of presentations including contributions by international speakers.

Other future IHBC Branch events include a IHBC London Branch CPD and networking opportunity in association with The Georgian Group on the 2 July , entitled ‘Update from the National Amenity Societies at The Georgian Group’, whilst IHBC South West Branch have organised a Branch Partnership event on ‘ Fire Protection and Regulation’ to be held in Exeter on 19 November.
