First trad-build-fest@Edinburgh’s Fringe

Edinburgh’s first traditional building festival, organised by the Edinburgh Traditional Building Forum, a group representing stakeholders from across the sector from architects and surveyors, to suppliers and craftsmen, will take place 21 – 24 August.

The aim of the festival is to celebrate Edinburgh’s traditional buildings and the materials and skills used to maintain them for future generations. The festival is funded by Historic Scotland, Construction Skills Scotland, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Stone Federation of Great Britain, with support from Edinburgh’s Telford College and Edinburgh World Heritage.

John McKinney, Chairman of the Edinburgh Traditional Building Forum said: ‘We are delighted to announce the inaugural Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival. The forum ran a property repair seminar last year and a traditional building skills exhibition at Edinburgh Castle in May this year, from these events it was obvious that many others share the passion for traditional buildings that forum members have. We decided to run the Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival so we could cover a wide range of topics which we hope will be of interest to everyone.’

The programme will include live demonstrations of slating and masonry skills, talks from heritage experts, conservation case studies, walking tours and advice on improving the energy efficiency of traditional buildings.
