IHBC welcomes HES’ ‘Heritage Training Course for Planners’ consultation – Please ‘Give your Views’, via survey (to 22/08) & more

The IHBC has welcomed the news that  Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is developing an online training course for planners about the historic environment, and seeks input to shape the content.

Katie O’Connell | Heritage Engagement Officer at HES writes:

The scope of the course is to provide in-depth knowledge and practical guidance, empowering planners to make informed decisions about the historic environment. It will cover a range of topics but will have a clear focus on understanding legislation and policy around the historic environment and change management, roles and responsibilities, and how to find/apply key guidance.

HES has commissioned the Diffley Partnership to engage with stakeholders and conduct a training needs analysis (TNA) to inform the development of this course. Your input is essential in helping us design relevant and impactful training.

You can get involved in two simple ways:

Complete an online survey. This will ask questions about what you see as the current skills gaps and priorities for learning. The survey is particularly directed towards planners as the learner group but we welcome responses from all stakeholders. The survey (hosted by HES on Citizen Space) is available here: TNA Survey  and is open until Friday 22nd August.

Attend a TNA workshop. This will be a collaborative online session (less than 2 hours) where you can share your thoughts on training needs for planning authorities around the historic environment. Please register your interest by Monday 28th Julyin attending a workshop here: Register Interest.  A privacy notice and participant information sheet is available to view as linked on the registration form. The workshops are being hosted by the Diffley Partnership who will be in touch later to confirm the dates and times for the workshops that work for most people.

You can also sign up to our mailing list to stay informed. We’ll keep you updated on future opportunities to share your views and help shape the direction of the project.

However you choose to share your views, your contribution will help shape future learning and development efforts. If you have any questions or would prefer to share your thoughts directly, please contact heritagepolicy@hes.scot

HES writes:

Historic Environment Scotland are seeking your views to help us develop a high-quality training programme to support decision-making by planning authorities in cases affecting the historic environment.

The need for this training programme was determined in part because of direct feedback from planning authorities as well as in alignment with the Scottish Government’s National Planning Skills Commitment Plan.

The course will provide in-depth knowledge and practical guidance on key aspects of heritage management, empowering planners to make informed decisions about the historic environment.

Why your views matter

We want to ensure this training course is as relevant and impactful as possible, that it is addressing knowledge and skills gaps identified by the users.  Your views on the proposed scope, content and delivery methods will inform the way we develop this training programme.

Along with the survey, engagement workshops will be held to discuss the proposed training course content in more detail.

The survey should take 15-20 minutes overall to complete. Some of the questions are optional so you can skip ones that aren’t relevant to you.

Who is this for?

The course is being designed for anyone working in planning authorities in Scotland but is particularly relevant for decision-makers who consider heritage as part of their work.

Objectives

The objectives of this survey are to understand:

  • priorities for learning;
  • current and future skills gaps;
  • confidence and familiarity;
  • preferred methods of delivery.
