IHBC features ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Old Sarum fire – Wiltshire Council ‘seeking legal advice’ in listed (& disputed) WW1 Hangar

Wiltshire Council has sought legal advice after fire engulfed a listed First World War hangar that was embroiled in a lengthy planning dispute, reports The Salisbury Journal.

The Salisbury Journal writes:

Emergency services are continuing a ‘complex investigation’ into the cause of the blaze at Old Sarum Airfield… The listed hangar, called Hangar 3, was partially derelict before the fire. Airfield directors believe much of the structure’s stonework remains intact and can be restored….

Wiltshire Council rejected the airfield’s planning application in August 2024 but failed to defend its decision….

Lucy Townsend, the council’s chief executive, said: ‘We’re very saddened…’

… Historic England… agreed ‘considerable parts of the masonry structure of the building’ are intact and are ‘capable of restoration’…
