Grade II Birmingham fire station makeover criticised by Design Council

The proposed conversion of the Grade II-listed former central fire station in Birmingham to provide student accommodation, including a 23-storey tower and commercial uses, has been criticised by the Cabe Design Council.

The latest report from the design review panel said it remained ‘unconvinced’ the design concept was the right approach for this site.

The report said: ‘The proposed new building does not complement or enhance the existing building or its wider setting. We also remain concerned about the long-term sustainability of the scheme and its relationship with the neighbouring Aston University Campus.

‘We think there is potential to deliver a convincing design solution for this site which responds to the townscape quality of the listed building. We continue to urge the design team to rethink the scheme. In light of our comments below we do not support the planning application.’
