IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘Our IHBC NewsBlog posts regularly review the diverse career opportunities in heritage, conservation and related areas as posted on the IHBC Jobs etc service.  This round continues to demonstrate the huge variety of roles that employers are looking to us to for help to fill, and takes a special focus on charity jobs where we offer targeted subsidies from c.25%, and that’s only to start!’

‘Career opportunities on IHBC Jobs etc. typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles.  But all reflect a common objective and strategy: in order to secure the person they need they target IHBC members, their skills and our wide-ranging networks.’

‘In this second Jobs etc. NewsBlog for 2025, we see the same variety of roles regularly coming to us to be filled, all reflecting too the role the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle model of skills and competence can play in assessing the potential of candidates.’

‘And with the current round of posts being slower, I am delighted to highlight alongside current job opportunities in the charity sector, the support we offer to conservation practice and HR standards to charities such as ourselves.’

‘While the charity sector – like government services – is a key part of our membership profile, we don’t often highlight the special support we offer there, including subsidising fees for posts on charity sector jobs by c.25%.

Most employers this round are well known to IHBC members, while but one that, because it’s less familiar, deserves special mention is the Flint House Police Rehabilitation, based in Oxford.  It is a registered Charity offering rehabilitation services to ill and injured serving and retired police officers suffering from a wide variety of physical and mental health conditions. The charity seeks a Head of Estates and Gardens, with a salary ‘up to £60 000 with great benefits’, while thanks to our support, as a charity, its post to members on our service could access a 25% reduction. And that’s the minimum possible, as noted below!

It’s not a free-for-all though, as subsidies cost us, so charities can access our reduced rates only when advertising direct through the IHBC – not via agencies, as we don’t see sector benefits in subsidising them.’

‘Other bodies in this round that could access these subsides include the National Trust, which seeks a Senior Building Surveyor, The Landmark Trust, looking for a Senior Projects Surveyor/Architect (North), the Canal & River Trust, which seeks a Heritage Advisor, and The Georgian Group, which is looking for a Conservation Adviser for South West England.

The IHBC’s subsidised support for conservation doesn’t end with charities, nor with the public or private sectors, as we also offer subsidies of up to 10% for ‘jobs specifying conservation and heritage accreditations’.  So, subject to that, such subsidies are available to both of those sectors as well, and with the right specifications, could include The Historic Building Advisory Service’s call for a Heritage Building Surveyor/Architect as well as Turley’s call for a Consultant/Senior Consultant in Heritage and Townscape.

A broad spread of disciplines and roles is evident across the above posts.  In contrast to those and to our usual public service offerings, local government posts this round present a more traditional focus on headline skills in ‘Conservation’, a very welcome sight indeed!’

‘So this round we are delighted to highlight Leicester, which seeks a Building Conservation Officer, Bedford, a Conservation Officer, and Dacorum a Conservation Officer / Lead Conservation Officer.  Indicating more nuance in the role, Newark & Sherwood seeks a Planner (Conservation) – Development Management.  And, again, all and any could access subsided posts subject to the terms noted in our guidance.’

This round of posts offers sound evidence on how our service – and the subsidies it offers – helps make a real impact on conservation-related matters, regardless of sector, disciple or level. And despite the lower numbers of opportunities than past rounds, all these postings confirm just how cost-effective the IHBC’s Jobs etc service actually is for anyone smart enough to take advantage.’

‘Our great value is a special strength in a sector that is invariably populated by price-sensitive employers, so please make sure your boss knows to use the IHBC’s Jobs etc service, and how to get the best value from it.’

‘Just as the roles here re-affirm the core public interest priorities that underpin this IHBC service, they also capture the broad spectrum of roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation model, the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle, our IHBC Areas of Competence, and the skills represented there.’

‘To find out more on our accreditation matters, our MATE and related sessions help career-focussed, conservation-conscious practitioners secure IHBC accreditation at minimal cost. These guide members and networks on how to align their skills, knowledge and experience with the IHBC’s own interdisciplinary assessment of conservation competence, a system aligned with national and international conservation practice standards.’
